Overview

Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a type of thyroid cancer that is uncommon but more aggressive. It arises from special cells in the thyroid gland called C cells that secrete a hormone called Calcitonin. This type of cancer is seen to run in families & shows a typical genetic mutation. Patients usually have no symptoms but some may develop a lump in the neck. Some patients have no family history of MTC. These patients are usually older & develop more extensive disease. This assay detects the gene mutation.
