Overview

Blood glucose / sugar is the main energy giving source in your body. It comes from the food you eat and is carried by blood to all the cells to use for its various functions. Some pregnant women develop high blood sugar which can affect the pregnancy and baby's health. This is called "Gestational diabetes". You may not have any symptoms but a routine check may show abnormal sugar levels. This test includes a fasting sample, then the patient is given 75 g of glucose drink and samples are taken after 1 hour & 2 hours. You cannot eat or drink till all the samples have been taken. If your test result is normal but your doctor still has a high clinical suspicion of gestational diabetes, you must repeat the test in the third trimester. In many women, blood sugar returns to normal levels after they have delivered the baby.

This test is recommended in pregnant women at 24-28 weeks of gestation not previously diagnosed with overt Diabetes. A diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes mellitus is made if any one of the following value is exceeded: fasting is > 92 mg/dL, 1 hour is >180 mg/dL and 2 hour is >153 mg/dL.

2 mL (1 mL min.) Plasma from 1 Grey Top (Sodium Fluoride) tube for each timed specimen. Draw baseline fasting specimen. Dissolve 82.5g glucose monohydrate (equivalent to 75g anhydrous glucose) in 300 mL water. Administer orally over a period of 5 minutes. Draw additional specimens at 1.0 & 2.0 hours. Note time drawn on each container label and test request form. Ship refrigerated or frozen. Overnight fasting mandatory.
