The immune system mistakenly damages the myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibres within the CNS. This disrupts signals sent by nerves to the body and affects vision, sensation and movement.

What Does a Normal and Abnormal Brain MRI Look Like?

A healthy brain MRI would show the following results:

 

  1. Clear grey matter and white matter boundaries
  2. Normal ventricles and fluid spaces
  3. Symmetrical left and right hemispheres
  4. No mass, bleed, stroke swelling or midline shift

 

An abnormal brain MRI would show the following results, which are signs of brain-related diseases:

 

  1. Dark or bright regions that indicate fresh or old haemorrhage
  2. Enlarged brain cavities with compressed brain tissues
  3. Mass lesions that shift midline and occupy space
