Turning 40 Soon? These Health Tests Are A Must

Turning 40 Soon

Did you know that one in every three adults has high cholesterol and people with high cholesterol have twice the risks of heart diseases as those with lower levels? This is why you need to regularly get checked for cholesterol as you get closer to 40. But this is not the only test you need.

While health screening is a good idea at any age, it becomes all the more necessary if you are entering 40s, as this is the time when most of the changes have taken place in the genetic makeup of a person. Moreover, lifestyle stress may also have affected your health significantly by this time. This is the right time when you should assess the current health status of your body and to help you with that, here are some health tests you must take in your 40s.

Diabetes screening: Diabetes is one of the most common lifestyle disorders that attacks in the mid-30s or early 40s. Being overweight or having a positive family history increases your risk manifolds. But it can attack anyone, so a fasting blood sugar test is recommended to keep a check on your blood sugar levels and stay away from its complications.

Cholesterol screening: High levels of cholesterol is one of the leading causes of heart attacks or strokes. According to a latest study, heart ailments were the cause of more over 25% deaths in India in 2015. But if abnormal levels are found at an early stage, it is quite manageable by making simple changes in your diet and lifestyle.1

Cancer screening: Cancer is a dreadful disease that has no exact cause. Early detection is the key to its management, and this applies to every type of cancer. Men should undergo colonoscopy for colorectal cancer, PSA blood test for prostate cancer, and check their skin for moles or other spots as a part of cancer screening. Similarly, women should get themselves screened for breast cancer through a mammogram, colorectal cancer through colonoscopy, Pap test for cervical cancer. Also, consult your doctor for any other tests you might need.

Exercise stress testing: This test is done to evaluate the health of the heart and its ability to handle increased workload. It works on the principle that when you work hard like run or jog,  your heart pumps more blood to provide the extra oxygen. This test helps your doctor determine if your heart is receiving enough oxygen and blood supply when you need it.

Osteoporosis screening: Age is a high-risk factor in the case of osteoporosis since with age comes Vitamin D insufficiency and reduced calcium absorption. Though regular calcium intake and taking care of your bone health can prevent osteoporosis but still it is recommended to undergo screening for osteoporosis once you enter the 40s.

Dental screening: It can detect early signs of oral health problems as well as bone loss. So, taking care of your teeth is also important and dental screening is recommended twice in a year.

This is just a simple list, and there can be many more tests that may be required depending upon your current health problems and family history. But ignoring health screening is not a good idea and can put you at risk of future illnesses that could have been stopped or slowed down by taking precautionary steps in time. Also, any abnormality in any system of the body must not be ignored and should be discussed with the physician. You should also keep a check on your family history and get screened for disorders (including cancer) that run in the family. About 48% of the Indian workforce suffer from some or the other type of stress which makes health tests like exercise stress testing even more important.
