International Day of Yoga

The United Nations recognised June 21st as the International Day of Yoga on 11 December, 2014, following a proposal by PM Narendra Modi at the 69th Session of the General Assembly. Yoga Day coincides with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

The theme for International Yoga Day 2026 is “Yoga for wellness, wisdom and world peace”. It underscores the increasing global need for natural healing, inner clarity, and stress management.

What is Yoga?

Yoga is a mind-body practice for improving physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj”, meaning to join or unite, reflecting the union of body and mind. It combines three key elements.

  • Movements or posture (asana)
  • Breathing (pranayama)
  • Meditation (dhyana)

What Are the Types of Yoga?

There are different styles of yoga that a person can choose from based on their goal and experience level. Some of the commonly practised yoga types are:

  • Hatha Yoga: Hatha yoga is one of the oldest forms of yoga that is beginner friendly. It consists of a mix of asanas that focus on strength, balance, flexibility, breathing and meditation.
  • Vinyasa Yoga: Vinyasa yoga is a vigorous style of yoga, consisting of continuous movement that synchronises with breathing and can be considered a yoga for weight loss.
  • Ashtanga Yoga: Ashtanga is a fast-paced yoga that consists of a sequence of six series with increasing difficulty. Each series includes a fixed order of movements synchronised with breathing.
  • Yin Yoga: Yin is a slow-paced yoga that consists of holding postures for a duration of 3 to 5 minutes. It increases blood circulation and trains the mind to stay present in stillness, making it an effective yoga for stress relief.
  • Power Yoga: Power yoga is a modern style of yoga similar to Vinyasa, but is considerably less rigid. The exercises included in power yoga depend on the individual trainer. It focuses on strengthening muscles and improving body flexibility.
  • Sivananda Yoga: Sivananda yoga is based on the teachings of Spiritual teacher Sivananda Swami. It is a form of Hatha Yoga and consists of breathing exercises, Surya namaskar and 12 basic asanas.
  • Kundalini Yoga: Kundalini yoga is designed to release pent-up stress at the base of the spine. It consists of repeated deep-breathing exercises, mantra chanting and meditation.
