Bar Coding Instructions
Majority of laboratory errors can be attributed to Pre-Analytic Factors like wrong labeling of specimen tubes. Bar coding tubes prior to sample draw is a good laboratory practice.
  • Use appropriate barcode stickers
  • No suffix stickers should be used for Biochemistry/Hematology/Immunology
  • Affix sticker on center of the tube
  • Numbers should be on the right hand side
  • G0 sticker is used for Blood Sugar Fasting and G9 for Blood Sugar Post Prandial. Do not use these barcodes for other sugar samples.
  • Precautions:
    • Do not change the numbers on the barcode by hand
    • Do not use ink or write on the barcode label by hand
    • Do not soil the barcode
    • Affix barcodes without any folds
    • Do not use bar codes of the previous year
    • Staple all unused barcodes to patient TRF to prevent inadvertent usage
