Bar Coding Instructions
Majority of laboratory errors can be attributed to Pre-Analytic Factors like wrong labeling of specimen tubes. Bar coding tubes prior to sample draw is a good laboratory practice.
- Use appropriate barcode stickers
- No suffix stickers should be used for Biochemistry/Hematology/Immunology
- Affix sticker on center of the tube
- Numbers should be on the right hand side
- G0 sticker is used for Blood Sugar Fasting and G9 for Blood Sugar Post Prandial. Do not use these barcodes for other sugar samples.
- Precautions:
- Do not change the numbers on the barcode by hand
- Do not use ink or write on the barcode label by hand
- Do not soil the barcode
- Affix barcodes without any folds
- Do not use bar codes of the previous year
- Staple all unused barcodes to patient TRF to prevent inadvertent usage
